Alexa Powell

Mental Health Social Worker, Grief Practitioner & Supervisor

Alexa (she/her) is a Zambian Australian woman based in Naarm (Melbourne). Alexa is passionate about creating a safe and empathic space for people from marginalised identities to explore feelings, process experiences and navigate difficult life circumstances. Alexa works with individuals and couples. She believes that a trusting and understanding therapeutic alliance (relationship between client and therapist) is key for positive outcomes for people seeking support.

Alexa practices from a Social Work, social justice and systems theoretical foundation, incorporating anti oppressive, trauma informed, intersectional, feminist frameworks into her work. She has extensive experience in working with loss, grief and trauma and understands the way power, systemic oppression and racism cause harm to emotional and physical wellbeing. Alexa has experience working in the public and not for profit sectors and can provide culturally safe supervision to Social Workers practicing in these spaces.

Alexa integrates her lived experience, theoretical knowledge and practice wisdom to guide and empower people to find meaning, overcome adverse life circumstances and develop a renewed sense of connection to self that fosters sustained holistic wellbeing.

She uses a mixture of therapeutic approaches in her work, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Family Therapy, Gottman’s Method, Narrative, Trauma focused therapy and Strengths Based therapy.
